June Ferren of Burbank, California recalls doing her part during WWII while working for Lockheed's P-38 Aircraft Division. She also recalls meeting and writing to four young men who were killed during the war. One young naval officer was a particularly close friend, but he died off the Normandy beaches in 1944 when his ship was hit and sunk. Curious after all these years as to his fate, and thinking he had gone down with his ship, June contacted the Naval Historical Foundation for help in finding out what had happened. The Foundation staff, using records in the Naval Historical Center's Ships' History Branch and Navy Department Library found the details of the ship's loss and the young officer's mortal wound. They traced the aftermath through the Navy's Office of Mortuary Affairs and let June know that her friend's remains had been brought back to rest in a California National Cemetery, not far from her hometown. "Thanks to you," wrote June, "I have closure."
