The AWCF field representative received a call late Friday afternoon from a member of the Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, Department of Case Workers. She had a young soldier in her office with a big problem. He had lost both legs above the knee when an artillery shell exploded behind him when he was on patrol in Iraq. He had to be in Lubbock, Texas early Monday to attend a custody hearing for his two children, both under the age of five years. The young soldier was desperate because he did not have the funds to make the trip to Lubbock. He had applied for a bank loan, but had been turned down. AWCF was able to provide him an Emergency Grant on the spot and he was able to drive to Lubbock for the custody hearing. This story has a happy ending as the soldier and his current wife were awarded sole custody of his two children. The Judge told him that this happened because he was at the hearing.
