Human Interest Story

The call came into the Lawton Armed Services YMCA from a social worker at Fort Sill. A young couple had a baby boy born with severe brain damage. The Mom had not been out of the house since he was born becuase he needed constant care. Can the ASYMCA help? We met with the parents and learned that Matthew required oxygen and a heart monitor 24 hours per day. He must be fed through a feeding tube in his stomach and he has a machine that suctions out his lungs. He really needed one-on-one care, so we called in a caregiver to work just with Matthew two days a week. This would provide Mom with time to do what she needed to do. Matthew is three months old and is not expected to live. The first serious infection could reduce this precious time because he will not be able to fight it off. The Armed Services YMCA is offering respite care for this family to try and help them through this very difficult time in their life. The ASYMCA has now found a home nurse who will go to the home to provide the care and will pay for this service until we are no longer needed.
