February 1995 - Normandy, France.
A stiff breeze blows inland. Men and women dressed for the damp, blustery weather move along the beach in small groups. Some join in animated discussion. Others pause to ponder. They come together and one begins to reconstruct not just the sights and smells of D-Day 50 years ago, but the actions and decisions that distinguished success or disaster.They look inland, then climb to the high ground, examine the fortified remains, face into the wind and re-examine the battle from the German perspective. They repeat the sequence at battle sites like Dieppe, Belleau Woods, Messina, Golan Heights, and Masada in Europe, Sicily, and Israel. These people are students from Marine Corps University who by virtue of their study, this experience, and the support of the Marine Corps University Foundation are even better prepared for the leadership challenges they will face.
