The CPOSF awarded fifty $2000 scholarships and one $5,000 scholarship in 2009.

Ben Lorenz graduated in the top 4% of his class at Great Bridge High School in Norfolk, VA in 2006. He was subsequently accepted to Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, VA and is now studying to be a Mechanical Engineer. In addition to maintaining his studies, Ben also does volunteer work with various charities such as Habitat for Humanity and the Special Olympics. Recently, Ben stated that, "The scholarship I received from the Chief Petty Officer Scholarship Fund paid for all my books, classroom supplies, and laboratory fees, which took a load off my mind and helped me focus on study instead of worrying about student loans. This scholarship definitely helped lift a great expense burden off my parents as well. Without the financial support provied by the CPOSF, I would never have been able to achieve my dream." Ben is currently completing an Internship with EXXON Mobile in Houston, TX.
