We received a call from a woman in a hotel room with her infant daughter. She fled an abusive man who smashed the baby's crib. She needed to start over. Upon moving to the National Home, she formed a trusting relationship with her case manager to help her learn about domestic violence, and move past her experience.

She learned more about parenting, managing her home and finances, education and employment; and she established herself as her own family. She moved off campus, and eventually met someone else and is happily married and had more children.

A woman from a veteran's family called from across the country, having learned that she had a brain tumor. She wanted to make plans for someone, perhaps the National Home, to care for her 9-year-old daughter, not wanting the child to end up "in the system." Over the next few months, she talked to a case manager, who assisted her in the grieving and planning process, and helped her find resources in her area.

This mother eventually made a decision to have someone else become guardian to her daughter, but had formed a bond and received the help she needed from the National Home.
